There is nothing like the beauty the perfect summer day out at the tip of Great Point on Nantucket island, The Nantucket Sound as brilliant blue as the eye could imagine with white sandy dunes and sea grass swaying in the soft summer breezes of the salty air that just takes your breath away. You look down the sandy path and you see the majestic view of Great Point Light... the bright white light that guides the great sailing ships around the point to safe harbors. This past summer I started the painting and recently finished the 18 x24 canvas.

Mystique Leaving Nantucket Harbor Artist Christopher Wheat

Along with my Paintings of Nantucket the one passion I have is painting and learning about Mega Yachts and Sailing Yachts. This is the painting I'm Working on right now of the Mega Yacht Mystique. I have seen her in the Nantucket harbor many times at Nantucket Boat Basin.

The day I got the reference photos to work from I was on jetties beach and she, Mystique was leaving the harbor. Funny the day before I kept saying, how great it would be to see her in motion leaving the harbor, that would make a great yacht painting, Well Prayers answered.

So now, I have been working on several other Mega Yachts and will be looking to team up with yacht and luxury bloggers to get the word out on a new project I have planed for this winter. stay tuned for more details coming soon.

Artist Christopher Wheat Painting at Brant point Nantucket September 2010

I just got back from a beautiful Fall painting trip to Nantucket. September on Nantucket, it never seems to disappoint, an extended Summer with the slower pace, really helped me get in to my work on this trip. With 7 days perfect weather I logged in many hours of painting as I had the opportunity to paint every day on location. My 2 favorite days were spent at Brant Point Light house at the entrance of the Harbor. Yes, sun screen in September was as important as the brushes, paint and easel. I was also able to work on a few custom paintings and few Island views that I have wanted to complete for my website, See them at www.christopherwheat.com

Have to thank The Century House for another wonderful stay. I always enjoy my time with you and thanks for making the inn like home for us when on island. You are a special part of Nantucket for me. Many Thanks your friend Christopher :)

My heart goes out to the Families of those effected by that tragic act. For me I will Never forget what happened on that tragic day. Great Point Light house Nantucket painting

It was a great morning in the studio today. I sketched out my next painting and can't wait to get to started on it. I may even lay down some color on it later today. I have been wanting to do this painting for a while now and look forward to posting the finished painting for you to see. I love great point light house it's a beautiful location on Nantucket, and if you have fished on Nantucket you know that it's a great place to do some surf fishing.

If you head out to Wauwinet you will need a 4 wheel drive vehicle with beach passes to and pay a beach access fee to go out to Great Point Light House, I have to say it is well worth it. If you you don't have a vehicle on island you can rent a 4 x4 Jeep at Nantucket Affordable Rentals located on 6 So. My mind is completely thinking about Nantucket today. I have been working on this painting of Brant Point Nantucket it's all sketched out and ready for the fun part, Paint!

I am looking forward to getting back on island and counting the days, I'm sure I will be at Brant Point a few time as it's one of my favorite places on Nantucket, with great views of the harbor and town.

Time to get excited about Nantucket vacation!

It's been a long winter and spring finally here and the spring greens a peeking through and the first of the Daffodils have bloomed over the past few days and it has me thinking of Nantucket in the spring. I'm longing to get back to the place I love. The excitement of spring on Nantucket is almost electric as the days get better and better. With the warm ocean air and the rain come some of the most beautiful gardens that spring can offer and I am longing to paint them.

So, I keep telling my self soon, Soon! And yes I will be there in a few short weeks to see all the colors taking off in late May and early June as I take my first painting trip to Nantucket of the season. Here is one of My favorite views of the Spring and summer colors of Nantucket in the painting titled "Nantucket Freedom".

It's been a long winter! March is here and I'm starting to get excited again. Living in NY winters are part of who I am and I can't help that. I love all the seasons! Yes its true all of the m even winter. The great anticipation of spring is in the air and I can feel my blood start to thin. The change of the season is only weeks away and I have been boxed up in my studio working on protects for the coming year and I'm ready for great things to unfold.

I know how important the planning stages are. It's what makes all the difference in the world, as I start to roll out my new ideas and really bring them in to play. I know and understand how this works, it has been the way I have been doing it with my paintings for over 20 years. You see, I started my art career as a drawer and that is my foundation to many of my great paintings today. Taking the time to plan allows you to learn patients and mold your plan in the direction of the best out come that you could for-see. It's doesn't mean that your plan can't change the plan for better results down the road or decide to put the map a side and create your own, it's just a road map a good starting point to point you in the direction you are looking to go.

Artist sometimes try to only stick to a plan or try to follow another artists path and feel that is the way to a successful career. Fortunately for me that was never the case, I never followed and I never will. I know you're saying to yourself ya right! or you should never say never and what is it that you just said about the Map thing, Right? Well, for me I knew I was going to be an artist at a very young age and that plan was already in place before I was old enough to even know what was really going on, My first paintings of boats and landscapes at the age of five. I never defined what I was doing by what others around me where doing and Art for me was a way for me to explore and hide from the day to day life I was troubled with at a young age. (More on that to come) For me it was my passion so early on in life that I never felt that I need to follow. Even now when I am teaching workshops, I explain to my students that your biggest accomplishments as an artist will come the day you define your own style. I encourage them to use these techniques as a map or foundation to create your own style.

That being said, The planning is over and I'm ready once again to put the map aside, it's time to take a look at what my true passion is and focus in on that and be lead by my own GPS, It's time to trust my heart! In today's world finding your passion and trusting your heart are going to be the best way to find true happiness and success at what ever you are doing. It's the key! and for me right now I have always known that my Custom Paintings of Nantucket are Special and look forward to creating and sharing them with you. It soon will be spring and I will be heading to Nantucket island again :)

One of my favorite places to go and paint while on Nantucket are the Creeks. Here is my latest small painting that captures the beauty and feel of the late summer Monomoy creeks. The sandy road invites you in through Roses known at "Rosa Rugosa" I love the twisting and winding creeks and the patterns that are worn in to the march grasses. Off in the distance is Nantucket harbor with the masts of Sailboats that are on moorings. The original is available and will be releasing a small limited edition print in the next few days. Nantucket Thoughts

Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas. I have to say mine was a little less eventful in many ways. However, I truly found more joy this year than all the years I spent running around overspending to make sure I was getting the right gift that would soon be put a aside for the next great gadget that came out. It takes me back to when I was a kid, now that I think of it!

To this day I can remember the one gift that my Grandfather would have for me that trumped all other gifts. Funny now that Im thinking of it and perfectly fits to what I experienced this year. When I was a young boy my Grandfather would leave me a bag of Apples for Christmas and it was the one thing I was always happy to get. You see my Grandfather knew that I loved apples. It was personal and from the heart that he gave me those apples and that is what makes for a special gift, a gift from the heart! So this year we cut back and gave from the heart. We listened the each others stories and the joy and happiness came through this Christmas. A true Blessing!

The New Year is almost here and I find myself thinking more and more about Nantucket. It has already been way to long, yet the days seem to go faster and faster. I'm so anxious to get back the the island and do some paintings and meet new clients. But I know the truth of the long winter days that summer is a long way off. Winter is set in here around me in New York and almost keeps me in lock down mode to my studio and for me that is a happy feeling. Not that I don't like to be social because I do love being around people, I Just find that this is the time I really get to sink into who I am and try to find out the person God wants me to be. A peaceful place for me that I truly enjoy.

I am just getting myself set on doing a series of paintings, large canvases of Nantucket. I'm going through sketches and reference photos to working from of my favorite locations and picking the best of the best. My hope is to come up with over 10 large master works that will be available for sale as soon as they are complete. I will be doing a video update of the progress of each of these a paintings as I work through them. Today, I will be making my first selection of the view and will be getting the main details sketched out on the canvas, Check back tomorrow to see what the first painting will be.

New Nantucket Prints for Holiday Shopping

I just released some New Mini Nantucket prints on My website this morning, www.christopherwheat.com Just in time for Holiday Shopping! The print above is an 8x10 of Brant Point Roses. One of My favorite paintings, this is the painting I was working on in the photo of me painting at Brant Point that is on my website and business cards right now.

Looks like the rest of the day will be left to marketing filling orders, a trip to Starbucks and a walk with the dogs at the Dog park. I do love taking them it's great to see my three Labrador Retrievers run and play and then get herded by my 7 month old boarder collie "Glory". I love watching her she is so intense,just amazing to see her work at such a young age. I'll post some pictures in the coming months for you to see her in action. It's been a few days since I have had time to get there with them and they have been begging me for days and know if I don't do it today, at may be a few more due to the big storm on the way.

Reminding me, I do need to get a new Winter shovel and pick up some salt for the driveway. Still makes me wonder what happened to the shovels, I had three of them last year and some how they have disappeared into thin air. Well, off to Starbucks and look for a shovel. Looks like high winds later today and Snow overnight and heavy snow for the next 6 days. Welcome to winter.

Thinking of Nantucket this Christmas

It's a cold day her in New York, No snow on the ground yet. The bird baths are frozen and the outside water bowls fro the dogs are frozen solid. Timber stopped as he mad his way into the house and glanced down at the bowl to make sure I was paying attention to him. I replied with i know boy I see! I'll take care of you inside.

Winter is coming as much as I don't want it to be here i do enjoy the slowed pace and with the cold chill in the air it will be a perfect day to be in the studio painting away. However this morning I'm finding it hard dig in. Not that I don't want to paint today. I just have a lot on my mind. This weekend on Nantucket was holiday stroll and I was thinking about being on Island all weekend long. Its been way to long since my last painting trip and I said last year at this time that I was going to make it to Christmas Stroll this year. Well it didn't happen :(

There has been so much of life taking up time, that sneaking in an extra fun event for me is just out of the question, at lest for now. My Mother in Law has been in and out of the hospital for the past 4 months with a roller-coaster of events. It's been hard to watch. But I'm truly thankful that we are here for now. Nantucket can wait for a few more month. I just hope the New York winter will be a soft one. I just dread the thought of a long cold winter.

I have been working on some new paintings that I have been posting to the website along with some new print releases. They are getting a great response for Christmas gifts along with the Nantucket Christmas Ornaments and I will be releasing more paintings and prints as I finish them along the way at www.christopherwheat.com I also have a new way for you to book a custom painting and hold your spot in my up coming years schedule for Nantucket custom paintings. I'm very excited that this year looks like it will be a record year for custom paintings already booking into summer and have many paintings I will be doing over the winter, some from photos and some are southern homes that i will be making a trip to go paint. "Foggy Morning, Walking Dog to Sankaty" Nantucket

This is my newest painting hot of the easel of the Historic Sankaty Light house on Nantucket Island. This is a 12x24 oil on canvas. The Morning fog is just lifting as the owner walks his best friend a Yellow Labrador retriever to Sankaty Light. One of my favorite things to do before I head off the my painting location for the day is to take an early morning walk. I can totally relate to this painting, I can feel the cool pockets of fog passing them by as they make the way up the sandy road. Nantucket Memories in a Painting

Its hard to believe that the summer is gone and the seasons are changing so quickly. The memories of summer are so vivid that the sounds of the summer on Nantucket are echoing in my studio as I work on my newest painting of the island,(back in my studio in NY). Besides the feeling I get when I'm on location painting on Nantucket, my studio is the one place that I can truly fined myself and do my best work. NY winters are hard to handle at times. I found that locking myself away in the studio and turning up the space heater to a tropical climate a great way to keep the depressing thoughts of the cold far away from my mind as I work on the summer scenes I love so much of Nantucket.

Today it is windy and cold for early October and for some reason, I can feel winter knocking on the door. It's time to get ready for the winter so, I have been working on getting my sketches together and plan out my winter painting schedule.

I'm working on several historic paintings of Nantucket right now that I have wanted to do for several years. One is of the whaling ship the Charles W. Morgan leaving Nantucket Harbor. A 36x60 oil on canvas. The second is a Historic view of the Nantucket Wharfs from the water and the last a street scene of lower Main Street. Also thinking about a holiday painting of Nantucket Christmas Stroll. Sailing off Great Point Nantucket

Wow, its been a great year for my Nantucket paintings, recently sold the original of this beautiful yawl Sailing off Great point. This painting is a great example of my custom portrait skills of Boat and Yacht portraits, A great gift for the upcoming Holiday season or special anniversary gift. It is true like it or not we all can do better. I remember in school that teachers would have us do projects on better ways to keep our environment and earth a heathier, energy efficient and friendly world. What really makes me sad is the fact that since the start of Earth day celebration in 1969, founded by John McConnell an environmental activist, I feel we have not made it priority enough. I was born near that time and 4o years has passed and we still struggle as a nation to have better energy policy, cleaner water and air, We have failed till now. I came across this video a few months ago and want to share it with you. It will speak to your heart, it did to me and brought me to tears. Please take the time to do earth day every day and not just once a year. Let's be the leaders that we once were and not be the follower. This could be the way that we build our economy to a better place than it ever was. We can do it better and we all can do better, so will you join me in sending this message to everyone, We all can do better, Earth Day everyday. Let's find better and more cost effective ways in our transportation and lets utilize the natural resources like the wind to create energy for our homes. Let's look at this time that we live in as a learning curve for all of us. 40 years of missing the mark is heart breaking and that maybe why we are here today looking for better ways. I wish more investors would see the light on investing in good art. Why not purchase something you can enjoy and live with while it gains value. Being a successful artist myself I have seen a 10 to 15% increase in value almost ever year for the past 20 years. I have tried to advise my clients over the years as to the value of collecting art. The one great things is that there is virtually an investment for every income level. You don’t have to purchase at the top nor do you want to. The key is to find a good artist that is making a career of being an artist, Not a part-timer. Find an artist that is selling and making art that people like and can understand, representational art is a good place to look… Landscapes, Seascapes, Marine art. Art investment has other advantages, you don’t pay Uncle Sam as the value of the work increase. You also have a direct involvement with how your investment will grow by working with the artist and building them up by investing in new works and sharing your center of friends co- workers and family the investment value of the artist. Don’t be greedy share your artist! Your artist will care for you as a friend and appreciate the support, in return may help you by being the first to see new works and get first pick of new painting. The pick of the litter. You get the best work. The work that will be most valuable and offer you the best return when you decide to sell. The Morning light is fading to afternoon and the September Green is holding on as the summer roses are at the last bloom. Old Sankaty Light house on Nantucket is on the move to a new home. Sconset is one of my favorite places on Nantucket, Here is my most recent painting an 12x16 oil on canvas. I started it over the summer and just finished it up in the studio.

My goal was to capture the warmth of the sun but also the breeze of ocean air and of course the beauty of the Sconset cottages and assortment of summer flowers on the way to the bridge. Nantucket Main Street

Here I am painting and the early morning fog is just lifting away and I have just been interrupted by this car in front of me. Mind you, if you look up main street there are no other cars to my left about 20 parking spaces. I'll decided to go get breakfast at Even Keel and plan my afternoon painting location with out cars.

Breakfast was great as always (pancakes,bacon, OJ and snack to go) Heading out to Madaket Harbor to paint for the afternoon.

If you have ever been to Nantucket you know the special feeling you get when you see Brant point Light house, It greets you every time you come back the the grey lady of the sea and wishes you well as you leave her. At the Holidays a wreath is perched up on the light house for season. The Nantucket Christmas Stroll is a special time of the year for Islanders and the few who take a venture over to the island to enjoy the season of shopping and friends on the snow covered cobble stone streets of Nantucket.

We have a goal of 200 ornaments by November 15th . A portion of all ornament sales will be used for a charity purpose for our giving back this holiday season to help a family in need.

I have always known, from the first visit to Nantucket that it would hold more memories and special times for me in my life. Birthdays are special more so now than ever. Today marks 40 years for me and just last year at this time I was on a one day trip to the island with my wife. She was at a job interview at the Nantucket MSPCA. I thought, well over the years I have had the opportunity to bring her along with me and that this time I would tag along and make a one day painting trip out of it. It was a beautiful day, So I ventured around town to see what was going on and stopped in to some of the galleries to say hello and then ran over to Even keel to get an Orange Juice and a muffin. I decided to go down to the wharf to paint. Not many boats in the harbor and the charter sail Endeavor was in her slip. The painting can be found in my earlier posts. Well ,anyway I wish I was there today painting. Today also marks half my life I have had the opportunity to painting scenes of Nantucket and I'm looking forward to many more. I will be posting some of my new paintings in the next few days so check back. Coming soon Sconset Roses and a great painting of the dunes at Steps Beach Nantucket. One of these might make a great gift for the fast approaching holidays for you Nantucket Lovers. The wharf at boat basin is one of my favorite places to paint. This painting is a 12x16 oil on canvas. I started it on location and finished it back in my studio. I love the feel of the harbor in this scene along with the flag flapping in the wind. The Endeavor is a sailing charter boat and has been operating since 1987 and runs from May to October. New Painting Nantucket Rose Cottages.
One of my favorite things about Nantucket is the the grey house with the white trim and all the roses. And yes don't forget about the hydrangeas. nothing says Nantucket more! This past year I planted a half dozen around my home studio to give me the feel of Nantucket when I can't be on island. However, I'm having problems getting them to turn the blue color I love so much. If any one has any solutions your help would be greatly appreciated. I have put several applications of aluminum down and no change. Help! The next time I'm on island painting I'm going to have too find some one to help me find the solution.

I was walking through the Cottages at Sconset and found these chairs so inviting to the eye with the seeder Grey and focused in on them. The original is sold however I just released a small number of prints. The print size is 16x20 framed is 20x24 inches.

I just started another painting of Sconset today I'll post it in a week.

Next painting trip is in August and then in September. I will be working from the sketches and Photo I took on this past trip and will be posting them on the blog and website over the next few weeks, hope you like them. More Nantucket Paintings. Hi to all, I just wanted to let you know about the workshop dates for my Nantucket oil painting workshops. The dates are subject to a 7 student minimum for the workshop. I would also like to keep the workshop class size to no more than 15 artists. The cost of the workshops doesn't include food or lodging expenses.

Painiting at Nantucket Boat Basin

Well, just made plans for the end of spring to get back to Nantucket and find out where things will be headed for me this Summer on island.

I will be focusing on custom paintings of Nantucket for clients for most of the summer. However, I usually plan out 15 to 20 painting for the year that will be for dealers and private collectors. The picture to the right is of me painting at Brant Point Light house, Nantucket this past summer. I had a wonderful stay at the Century House the in on the cliff. This inn is where all the top artists painting on the island stay. The owners Gerry and Jean Ellen are celebrating 25 years on island as the innkeepers of the oldest running boarding house on the island. This year will be 175 years for the Century House. It is my favorite place to stay. I will be heading out in a few weeks for my spring painting trip . I will be hosting a painting workshop on island this summer keep a look out here and on my workshops page for dates and details. Learning Acoustic Guitar, Getting back in to baseball can’t pick a team though. Pets, love my dog Timber a 3 year old Chocolate Labrador retriever. I'm also working with a local Labrador retriever rescue fostering and helping great labs that have been neglected or just dealt a bad card in life recover and find a new loving home.
